#oh #oh boy here we go guys #take a seat and buckle up #because i’m about to take y’all on a one-way trip aboard the feels express #because sweet merciful krishna these two just hit me right in the goddamn tender feels so much that i need all of you to share my agony #first off: for all the praise tumblr heaps on to hiddles (rightly so) poor chris gets forgotten often #but poor thor here #he’s damn near close to tears #the firstborn warrior-prince of the goddamn space vikings who fears nothing in the entire known universe #is nearly in tears #is reduced to nothing but an older sibling desperately trying to coax an unruly younger brother out of a tantrum#thor’s used to solving his problems with force and stubbornness and brutality #and all these traits are powerless against loki #he might as well try to force the wind#and speaking of loki #let’s talk about loki #loki silvertongue #loki lie-smith#prince of mischief and trickery #can’t say a damn thing #he can’t even deny his brother #can’t even pretend for a moment that it’s not what he wants #he’s so conflicted and unsure every time his and thor’s desires align because isn’t thor supposed to be his enemy now? #didn’t he renounce his home? #his family?#wasn’t that the point? #how could they possibly want the same thing? #and it’s very telling of loki’s youngest-son-complex #my stupid older brother #he says

“firstborn warrior-prince of the goddamn space vikings”

“You come home.”

“I don’t have it.”

Sure, the conversation continues in the context of not having the Tesseract, but come on. This is Loki. Born of one world, raised in another, belonging to none.

Goodness both of them are brilliant actors. The fact that they can put these emotions behind their characters to the point that the audience psychologically analyzes every line and every gesture is absolutely beautiful. And the thing is that their performances are amplified by the fact that they are really good friends in real life. Tom said himself that they’ve been on this journey together and you can only be this vulnerable with someone you like working with. I know there are other on-screen relationships that translate off screen as well, but these guys just happen to be right in front of me right now so I have a lot of feelings that I can’t express.

One thing that really struck me about this scene— Thor, ever so strong and brave and optimistic, is so near to tears that it hurts. And Loki? You can see the tears in his eyes, but that’s not what really hits me in the gut with him. Here you see the god of mischief and lies, lauded for his silver tongue, at a loss for words. He smiles, his eyes flicker for a moment, he bows his lips and raises his eyebrows, but he can’t find the words to speak and has to reply through expression alone. He’s reduced to a weak shake of the head, as if to say “I can’t” to everything— I can’t go home, I can’t give up now. I can’t even speak.

This scene, man.

This whole scene drives home Coulson’s assessment of Loki but makes it incredibly painful: “You lack conviction.” Loki is constantly tearing himself between two polarizing desires throughout this whole damn movie. He wants to be acknowledged as equal (better!) than Thor, he wants to denounce him completely. He knows that it’s too late to stop the war he’s started but there’s a part of him that would if he had the chance. He lacks conviction because Loki is not far gone enough to be in absolute control of the destruction he has a hand in. He’s a player in it at best, and at worst, he’s a pawn. He doesn’t have enough foresight to understand the consequences of his actions, or to see the entirety of what he’ll have to do before it’s too late to decide he doesn’t want to do it.
